Mabel is a pit bull mix. No one knows with what, but you can try and guess.

Distinguishing Characteristics

She "talks" all the time - her repertoire of squeeks, grunts, groans, moans and barks is really amazing. She has one cauliflowered ear from a neglected infection and her front teeth are cut down - both traces of her former life - so she looked to us like a kooky grandma when we met her.....hence the name Mabel.

Do you have any canine housemates?

Yeah, my brother-by-another-mother, Kojak. He was rescued by my people the year before they got me.

How did you join your family?

I was rescued by the great people at Don’t Bully My Breed in the fall of 2009, then lived with my awesome foster family for eight months while I recovered from my experience, until I was adopted by my forever people in August 2010.

Do you have any “jobs”? Tell us about them and what you like most about them.

My job is to eliminate all squeeky toys, vacuum cleaners, ropes, sticks and balls from the face of the earth by relentlessly destroying them.

Do you do any tricks? What is your favorite?

I can swing really high in the air holding onto a rope tied to a tree! I also can walk on ladders, sit on bar stools, go on slides and occasionally sit and stay.

What is your favorite toy?

What is your favorite treat?

I’m not super into food, but I do like pepperoni. I’d rather tug than anything.

What do you like to do when your parents aren’t home?

Sleep next to Kojak on the couch. But don’t tell them that. We like to run to the door when they get home and pretend like we were terrified they were never coming back so we get more treats and play time.

Is there anything you would like to tell us about your work with Safe Humane Chicago or anything else?

I love going to school!
